Make Time for What Matters Most: A Personal Reflection

Sometimes, life sends us reminders that are as gentle as a whisper—or as jarring as a thunderclap. Last week, I lost a dear friend unexpectedly. She was my age, vibrant, active, and deeply loved by her family and friends. Married to her best friend for 50 years, she filled her days with laughter, movement, and connection. Her sudden passing from a massive stroke left all of us stunned, and I found myself reflecting on the moments I let slip by—the dinner plans I meant to make, the calls I postponed, the simple joys I assumed could wait for another time.

Why We Wait—and Why We Shouldn’t

It’s so easy to get caught up in the routines and responsibilities of daily life. We tell ourselves we’ll reach out soon, visit next month, or plan that get-together when things “settle down.” But as I was reminded this week, none of us are promised tomorrow. The moments we yearn for—laughter around the table, a walk with an old friend, a heartfelt conversation—are the ones that make life meaningful.

  • Prioritize connection: If someone crosses your mind, reach out. A call, a text, or a simple invitation can mean more than you know.
  • Make space for joy: Don’t let busyness crowd out what matters. Set aside time for people and activities that fill you up.
  • Release what drains you: Life is too short to stay in situations or relationships that sap your energy or joy. Notice what uplifts you—and what doesn’t.
  • Say the words: Don’t wait to express your gratitude, love, or appreciation. Sometimes, the words left unspoken are the ones we regret the most.

Living Fully—Not Just Getting By

My friend’s life was a testament to living with intention and joy. She didn’t settle for the status quo—she sought out connection, meaning, and fun. Her legacy is a reminder to all of us: Don’t let life just happen to you. Choose what brings you joy, and don’t be afraid to let go of what doesn’t. If you (or someone you know) feel stuck in a job, relationship, or routine that leaves you feeling empty, it may be time to consider a new path.
